America’s been lifted out of many of its most difficult hours through the miracle of faith and through people like Bishop Jackson and Dr. Jackson.
Now, in these hard times for our country, let us turn again to our Christian heritage to lift up the soul of our nation. I am so deeply grateful to be here today and it is my prayer that America of tomorrow, and I mean that, the America of tomorrow will be one of unity, togetherness and peace, and perhaps we can add the word prosperity—OK, prosperity.
Trump’s message in Detroit reminded me of something Bishop Darrell Scott said in one of our meetings, “Looking back over the last 15-20 years, the closest thing to a breakthrough for the black community was the faith-based initiatives experiment under President George W. Bush. They never really looked at the data,” Darrell said. “The early results were impressive and nothing since then has come close to tapping into the latent power of the African-American church to make a difference in these communities.”
From this moment onward, Trump began wrestling more specifically with the challenges facing the African-American community. When riots broke out in August in Wisconsin, Trump began to make his case for how his administration would be different than previous Democrats or Republicans. Trump’s legacy is about making America great again, and that includes all races and all socioeconomic backgrounds. It is not about making Republicans great.
The colorful fight promoter Don King has been a friend of Trump for years. Introducing Trump to a pastor’s gathering at Bishop Scott’s church in Cleveland, Ohio, King said, “My friend Donald Trump only sees one race, the human race.” King pointed out the absurdity of media accusations portraying Trump as a “Hitler or KKK” when his history with black celebrities and entertainers spans 30 years of public record.
